Welcome to my class!

Welcome to first grade.  My name is Christy Meyer.   I grew up seven miles east of Winthrop and graduated from East Buchanan Community School.  My husband is an East Buchanan graduate and my four children now attend.  You could say, East Buchanan is in our blood.  I have taught first grade for the past four years.  I taught in Hawaii for a year and previous to that I taught at East Buchanan for two years.  I have my masters in reading and teaching students to read is my favorite part of first grade.

Every week I will send home a homework sheet.  The homework for the week will be posted and your child will need to read ten minutes every school night.  I ask that you sign or initial every night and you child bring it back daily so I know they have read.  There will also be a question of the day for you to ask your child.  I do this to help initiate conversation about their school day.  Please feel free to jot any questions or comments on this because I will be initialling it daily and will answer any questions.

HELPFUL WEB PAGES

Dolch words are a list words that first graders need to learn to read and spell.  You can pick up a set of flash cards to practice or if you want to make your own the following website has them in flash card format.  You just have to print them off and you are ready.
http://theschoolbell.com

Your child will also need to learn basic addition and subtraction facts up the 18.  Flash cards are helpful for this as well.  A site for ready to go flashcards: www.aplusmat.com

First graders who can read or recite each math fact within 3 seconds is considered mastery.
Have fun practicing!
